A family legacy.
In 1969, Italian immigrants Luigi and Maria D’Abbondanza started the Royal Shirt Company in the basement of their Toronto home. From its humble beginnings, their vision was built on a shared passion for creating well-constructed tailored men’s shirts.
Luigi and Maria’s daughter Anita and her three sisters were raised in the shirt business, learning the trade alongside their parents. As the Royal Shirt Company gained a reputation as one of the finest menswear producers in North America, Anita took on increasingly responsible roles in the factory, eventually joining Luigi and Maria full-time.
A family tradition.
In 1999, after the original Royal Shirt Company attracted the interest of a major U.S. menswear manufacturer, it was sold and Anita started her own company shortly after, which she named Shirtfit Inc. Keeping with the family tradition, Shirtfit’s bespoke and ready-to-wear shirts incorporate Anita’s passion for the latest technologies while still being mindful of her artisanal history.
As a tribute to her parents’ legacy, Anita is reintroducing the Royal Shirt Company label to a new generation seeking ethically produced, beautiful garments. Although styles have evolved, Royal shirts are still handcrafted in Toronto using only the finest fabrics, just as they were more than 40 years ago.
